We’re thrilled to announce the hiring of our newest team member, Will Wright.
Will specializes in press outreach, copy writing and curating social media posts that draw engagement. He joins Chris Poore, Tracy Staley and Jamie Lawson Reeves at Great Stories, LLC.
Will got his start studying journalism at the University of Kentucky. He worked as the Editor-In-Chief of the student newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel, managing more than a dozen reporters, editors and designers.
After graduating in 2016, Will left Kentucky to hike the entirety of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. He got his professional start as the Eastern Kentucky bureau chief for the Lexington Herald-Leader. Will wrote about the environment and the economy, as well as feature stories from across 13 counties in Appalachian Kentucky.
Will then worked as a National Reporting Fellow for The New York Times, writing from his desk in Jersey City as well as from the field. The Times sent him to Portland, Ore., Louisville, Ky., and Louisiana to write about a variety of subjects throughout the year. His work at the Times taught him to write quickly and concisely, and he’s brought that talent with him to Great Stories.
After his year with the Times, Will moved to Charlotte to work as a reporter for The Charlotte Observer. He covered local and state politics, including North Carolina’s 2022 U.S. Senate race.
Over the course of his career, Will won awards for his work and was a finalist for the prestigious Livingston Award for Young Journalists.
Will joined Great Stories in November and has managed press outreach and social media for his clients. He also compiles and writes copy for newsletters and has written and designed blog posts.
For one of Great Stories’ clients, The Center for Rural Strategies, Will promoted a documentary about flooding in Eastern Kentucky and got a news release and video published in outlets across the region. As a former reporter, Will knows how to market your stories and products to news outlets.
